book covers

cover design, illustration

Another way I find myself combining design and illustration is in making book covers. When I was younger, books were often the source of my inspiration to create by making illustrations of the events in the story or redesigning the covers to match how I understood the book after reading it. Here are two cover designs I created in my free time.

jungle book

This is an example of a book cover that is illustration heavy and visually conveys key themes in the book. With the contrasting colors of orange and green, I’m able to represent how even though Mowgli was raised in the jungle he simply doesn’t belong there according to the Law of the Jungle. Orange in this case also represents “man’s red flower” or fire, something that is feared by the animals in the jungle much like man itself.

to kill a mockingbird

For this cover, I wanted to emulate the classic “big title” style book cover. To Kill a Mockingbird is such a known book that the title alone is enough to draw people to it. The goal was to keep it minimal, give the viewer just enough to be interested in what was inside without giving too much away.
